Digital cameras enable anyone to make close up and macro images of WA’s spectacular wildflowers. Whether you have a DSLR or a compact you can learn the controls and features on your camera to produce pin sharp, correctly exposed wildflower images with accurate colour. This day course includes a classroom session, lunch and a hands-on field session among the flowers. Learn with Master Photographer Dale Neill.

Digital cameras facilitate close up and macro images of our wildflowers. Ironically, compact cameras often outperform DSLRs in macro photography. Learn the controls and features on your camera to produce pin sharp, correctly exposed wildflower images with accurate colour. Even if your only camera is a recent smartphone you can bring it along for this course.

Discover how sensor size, flower shape and aperture influence depth of field. Follow tips to focus more accurately, control camera shake and address movement of the subject in the field. Improve your design by learning the fundamental techniques of focus, colour and tone to separate the subject from the background.

Topics covered include:

• Shoot and review modes, delete, format and reset functions
• Setting a single focus point
• Auto versus Program operation
• How to set up your camera for close-up/macro
• Determining minimum focusing distance
• Role of zoom in macro
• Camera and subject steadiness techniques
• Depth of field in close-up and macro
• Three separation techniques – focus, colour and tone
• Equipment for intermediate and advanced macro
• Practical assignments shooting close-ups and macro of flora, textures and insects

THINGS TO KNOW

The morning session and lunch will be held at The University Club of Western Australia

You will need your own transport to meet at the nearby wildflower location for the afternoon field session.

Compact cameras

• No additional accessories required.
• Even if your only camera is a recent smartphone you can bring it along for this course.

DSLRs and mirrorless cameras

• Close-up photography is up to 1:1 magnification. Satisfactory results can be achieved with your standard lens but will be improved with supplementary close up lenses. Close-up dioptre lenses are recommended but not essential.
• Macro is magnification of 1:1 or greater and requires specialised equipment.

Bring

• Camera with a fully charged battery. Spare battery if you have one.
• Minimum 4GB memory card. Please format your card before workshop.
• Camera instruction manual
• A hat, sunscreen and insect repellent are recommended
• A tripod is desirable but not essential
• Notebook, pen and patience!

Lunch will be provided and is included in the cost.
