How to keep a beehive
This course has no current classes. Please the waiting list.
Did you ever want to have your own beehive? Or perhaps you just want to take better care of your bees. Please only attend if you have been stung by a bee in the past and do not have a serious bee allergy. This basic overview explains how to manage a healthy, productive honeybee colony. Learn how to work with these fascinating insects and produce your own local honey.
The theory section will take you through the logistics of starting in bees, how to use your equipment, how to register as a beekeeper, recognising disease, what a colony needs to stay healthy, how to re-queen and how and when to take off honey.
The practical session will give you hands on experience of a bee colony, expand on and show what was learnt in the theory session. Also recognising and locating the queen, colony orientation, how to enjoy the beekeeping experience and keep it low stress for the bees and yourself.
The practical session will be held in the CIBER bee yard at UWA Crawley.
THINGS TO KNOW
- Please only attend if you have been stung by a bee in the past and do not have a serious bee allergy
- Do not bring any of your own equipment, everything will be supplied
- For the practical part of the course wear enclosed shoes, and light coloured socks which cover the ankle
- We reserve the right to defer course if weather is unsuitable for practical component of the course
