Professor John Stanton has been the Curator of the Berndt Museum since 1978 and has worked extensively in the area of Aboriginal arts. His PhD was carried out in the Western Desert, working with Eastern Goldfields communities, and he now directs a number of research projects including those with a special focus on assisting Aboriginal communities to establish local Keeping Places and Cultural Centres. He has curated a number of travelling exhibitions, the most recent being Aboriginal Artists of the South-West: Past and Present, which he did with Nyungar artist Sandra Hill. Every year John teaches an Anthropology unit entitled, Aboriginal Art and Society at The University of Western Australia.
