Described by Neville Cohn as “… a musical Midas, turning everything he touched into musical gold”, JANGOO CHAPKHANA is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most polished all-round performing artists. A performer who truly defies categorization, he has established a solid profile as a conductor, jazz pianist, choral specialist and soloist.
Jangoo Chapkhana completed an honours degree in performance and composition at UWA and trained as a conductor at the Peter the Great Academy of Music, St Petersburg. As a recitalist, he has performed as a soloist in Westminster Abbey, Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires, St Mary the Virgin (New York) and other such prestigious venues. His conducting credits include Bach’s Magnificat, Handel’s Messiah and the musical Oliver! He is scheduled to conduct Les Miserables in October and will present an organ recital in Washington National Cathedral in 2013.
Highly regarded as a jazz pianist and educator, he lectures in the art of jazz improvisation at Edith Cowan University. The Jangoo Chapkhana Trio is described as “having the precision of a Swiss watch”. They have been lauded for their interpretations of the great jazz standards and their fantastically fresh arrangements of more contemporary material – all laced with that crisp precision and harmonic magic, defines their sound.
Jangoo Chapkhana also enjoys a career as an actor and has recently completed filming “Squatter” and “Rays of Sunshine” for Seventh Continent Productions.
