Dr Francis (Frank) Palmos was Australia’s youngest foreign correspondent when he founded the first Australian newspaper bureau in Djakarta in 1964, having studied Indonesian in Bandung and Djakarta. As simultaneous interpreter for President Sukarno and Dean of the Foreign Press Corps, he witnessed every major Indonesian crisis of the era. Francis served four tours and 33 missions in the Vietnam War. His book Ridding the Devils, based on these experiences, was published in 1990. His English version of The Sorrow of War, 1994, is acknowledged as one of the best translations of the 20th century. Francis has featured on Philip Adam’s Radio National program Late Night Live.
